Black Women- How Relevant Are We?

To put it quite simply… women of color are the most marginalized group in society.

Why? Because sexism often means that our value is based on how beautiful we are rather than how smart or competent we are (and our skills in the kitchen too, I suppose, but mainly beauty). You only need to look at how much discussion goes on about Michelle Obama’s wardrobe and hair as opposed to her role as First Lady. Across the pond, we are OBSESSED with Kate Middleton’s shrinking frame and luscious locks- but who knows what she’s really doing with her life in that castle? Does anyone care? Hardly.

But racism also means that who and what we are is neither beautiful nor desirable according to dominant social ideas (again, I’m putting this in VERY simple terms so disagree all you want but we all know it’s true- it’s the reason the global black female population cannot survive without relaxers, weave, lace-fronts and all that).

I hate to put this out there but on the very simplest of terms, black women have little relevance in society as a whole and no Michelle Obama or Beyonce is going to change that.
